Having pioneered winemaking in Almansa for more than 100 years, in 2017 Piqueras acquired a 280-hectare estate, Finca El Vinculo, located around the natural environment of Almansa’s dam. Certified as ‘Organic’ and amongst almond and olive trees and a Mediterranean low forest, these vineyards have the perfect climate for the cultivation of organic grapes which are in complete harmony with nature in a biological microsystem where animals, plants, sun, earth and air all interact with each other to create the perfect conditions for the vine. Piqueras’ commitment to the environment and to using 100% renewable energy at the winery also comprises a large area dedicated to the organic cultivation of olive trees and cereals. Piqueras use only sustainable energy thanks to the installation of solar panels on their warehouse roof. The 2500m2 of solar panels produce 100 kWh, which far exceeds their day-to-day requirements and reduces their production costs while improving air quality and the environment. In order to reduce emissions in logistics, Piqueras use light bottles, recycled cardboard boxes, lighter weight dividers and walls which helps reduce packaging.
All Piqueras grapes have been produced organically for several years now and they have the certificate to bottle and label all their wines as organic to justify this. This certification requires the fulfilment of a whole series of criteria related to cultivation and production with the objective of guaranteeing to customers that they have a natural, organic wine, without any use of chemicals or additives. In order to obtain a better control and quality of their organic wines, in 2016 Piqueras inaugurated a new winery dedicated entirely to the elaboration of organic wines. By using a system of rotating vats for the extraction of colour and tannins naturally, without the use of mechanical overruns, this allows for the preservation of fruit and aromas of each grape variety. Although Piqueras are organic, not all their wines are marked with this on the label. Unfortunately, there are commercial strategies and points of sale that do not recognize the added value of an organic product, so there are markets where Piqueras prefer not to include this seal on the label. Piqueras have always allowed nature to express itself and not to interfere with excessive treatments, and thus promote a natural crop.
