DO Cariñena was created in 1932 and belongs to part of the autonomous community of Aragón in northern Spain. It is one of the oldest protected wine-growing regions in Europe. Located 50km southwest of Zaragoza, on a plateau, vineyards range 400m-800m above sea level as they approach the Sierra de La Virgen Mountains bordering to the west on DO Calatayud. It has a continental climate with long, hot, dry summers and cold winters with temperatures falling as low as -8?C. The cold northerly wind, El Cierzo, helps to maintain low humidity. The main problems for the grape growers are the risk of hailstones, strong winds and excessive summer heat, as drought can affect the harvest. However, the large difference between day and night-time temperatures is a positive contributory factor to the characteristic intensity of the Cariñena wines. The 1990s saw a period of rapid growth in Cariñena thanks to the merger of several smaller wineries and cooperatives, and their adaptation to produce wines that suit a more modern palate: fruitier, lighter and more balanced. Exports have quadrupled since 1995. Established in 2003, Bodegas Esteban Martin is an exciting, family-run, modern and innovative winery located in Alfamén, in the heart of Cariñena. Their desire to produce wines of excellence is achieved by the fact they only use grapes from their own estate, 150 ha in total, making it possible to control the entire growing process using varieties best suited to the soil: Garnacha,Tempranillo, Syrah,Cabernet and whites, Macabeo, Chardonnay. With modern facilities and 300 new French and American barrels, their wines offer a distinctive personality of modernity at affordable prices. For Cariñena-born oenologist, Jorge Barberia who spent 10 years making wines around the world, the most important part of his job is his work in the vineyard. “Esteban Martin wines are fresh, fruity with good balance and silky tannins. Wines with soul” says Jorge and “they have enormous success in tastings around the world”. Passion, terroir and personality clearly take place in each bottle, a blend of modernity and know-how to reach their ultimate expression. The winery has the BRC Global Standard certificate and IFS. All are now Vegan friendly.
