Bodegas y Viñedos Luna Beberide, situated in El Bierzo,
in the northeast of Castilla close to the borders of Galicia
and Portugal, is a small family-owned and run Single Estate
that produces high-quality white and oak-aged red wines. In
1987 Fernando García and Bernardo Luna acquired further
vineyards to those already owned by the family, to create
a total of 80 hectares of vineyards, which are divided between
three fincas - ‘Viña El Francés’
where Mencia, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer are grown, ‘Viña
El Castrillón’ with Cabernet,
Merlot and
Tempranillo,
and ‘Viña Aralia’ where mainly white grapes
are grown. The bodega and vineyards are situated in Cacabelos,
Vilafranca del Bierzo (Castilla-León), more precisely
and locally known as El Bierzo Bajo, a depression surrounded
by a circle of mountains and irrigated by the Río Sil
and its tributaries. It has a warm microclimate (average temperature
15deg.C) with a high degree of humidity and a special luminosity
(2700 hours of sunshine per year). The rainfall is between
650 to 1000 mm per sq. metre. The vineyards, which use the
trellis system, are on an undulating terrain at an altitude
of 512 metres where the soil is alluvial with alternating
areas of clay and slate. The development of the vineyards
was completed in 1995. The construction of a new bodega in
Cacabelos, with the most modern stainless steel installations
and latest technology, was completed in 1990-91 and the first
wine was vinified in the autumn of 1991. Luna Beberide was
elected a member of Grandes Pagos de España
in September 2002.
