Founded in 1998, Cellers Baronia is the initiative of partners Carlos Macías Gallego and Xavier Canals, the oenologist, who both had a clear vision of breaking away from the traditional style of bodegas in the region to produce a range of elegant, modern, distinctive and top quality wines using primarily the autochthonous varieties, Garnatxa and Cariñena, of the Montsant region. The Clos d'englora range is made under DO Montsant. Production is very small, about 80,000 bottles, mainly from old, low-yielding Garnatxa and Cariñena vines complemented with small percentages of international grape varieties. The winery is situated high up in the mountains in the beautiful village of Cornudella del Montsant which is overlooked by the Montsant massif. It is an area of breathtaking, mountainous vistas. DO Montsant, a region of difficult and undulating terrain, lies within the Catalonian autonomous community. It was carved out of DO Tarragona in 2001 in recognition of the region's ability to not only produce consistently high-quality wines but also the need to establish a separate identity for its prime high-altitude vineyards. Montsant lies west of Tarragona and almost completely surrounds DOC Priorat. Most of the prized sites within Montsant are located on elevated steep slopes, where the vines enjoy long Mediterranean sunshine during the day and cool temperatures at night, assisting in the development of aromas while maintaining vital acidity in the grapes. The soil here is known locally as 'Llicorella', high in granite and slate mineral components. Together, these growing conditions result in wines that are concentrated and expressive of the local terroir.
